Project BMG – Do What You Love

August 15, 2016

Everyone has natural talents, and most people have things they are good at but they have to work at it. Some things are hard wired into your DNA, and others are learned abilities. Some people know what their purpose is, their calling. Others have to try many different things before they realize what they were meant to do with their life. It may take a lifetime for you to realize your calling. For me, I was born to take care of animals. I have loved dogs and cats (and many other animals also) since before I can remember. I feel a need to care for them, to save them and to make sure they are loved.
I didn’t know until a few years ago that I was really interested in writing. I have always loved to read so I figured it would only be natural for me to try writing. Writing is something I have to work at. I am imaginative, but it is hard to get my ideas into writing. Sometimes I get nervous about my fiction story ideas, and then I give up on them and they never get finished. I worry that no one will like them.
I recently finished my first big freelance writing project, and I was really nervous that my client wouldn’t like my story and that I would basically be rejected from my freelance contract. I had poured so many hours into writing this fiction story, and worked very hard to make it unique and yet familiar at the same time. When I finally turned it in, Sunday night, I laid down in bed and tried to go to sleep. I woke up about half an hour later, having just dozed off, to a flurry of notifications. I thought to myself, here we go, she is telling me my work is awful and she isn’t paying me. I tried not to look at my phone, I wanted to postpone the inevitable failure of my first decent paying contract.
Needless to say that didn’t last very long. I finally looked at my phone. My client had emailed me and told me that my writing was very engaging and that she really enjoyed it. I was in pure shock! I couldn’t believe that she liked it. She asked me to write a sequel story, and also gave me a bonus.
I wanted to share a little bit of success, because I think people tend to underestimate and doubt themselves. I almost let fear of failure control me, because I didn’t believe in myself enough to think that anyone would like my writing. I just want to share that just because something isn’t easy, or doesn’t come to you naturally, doesn’t mean that it isn’t what you are supposed to do with your life. Sometimes it could be even more meaningful, than something that you are just naturally good at. The journey is sometimes just as important as the end result. You will have a feeling of accomplishment, knowing that you were challenged along the way, but that you made your own way. Blogging has been an amazing part of my journey so far and has taught me many things!

This is how many writers feel. In some, it’s a trait then encourages more writing and in some, it instills fear. I am glad you don’t have fear now.
