Guest post: How to Not Give Up on Your Dreams

September 1, 2016

We all feel this way sometimes, like your dreams are out of reach and never going to happen. No matter how hard you work, these things take time, and that doesn’t help you feel any better. Neither does comparing yourself to people who’ve been in the business longer, thinking you’re a failure, or considering giving up entirely. I’ve been feeling a little like that myself at the moment, and so I thought I would share with you four tips to help you keep going, when you feel like giving up on your dreams.

Focus on the little things

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the big picture, and lose sight of the small steps along the way. It’s a ladder, not a long jump. Instead of focusing on the bad, take a few minutes to think about the good things in your life. Did your favourite blogger mention you on twitter? Did you reach a new record of responses for a post? It doesn’t even have to be about blogging. Were you woken up by a kiss from your pet this morning? Did you finally finish the book you’ve been reading? Give yourself tiny goals along the way, as well as the big ones, and take time to appreciate the good in your life.

Ask yourself who you’re doing it for

Obviously, you should be working towards your dreams for you, but if you think about it there are other people involved too. At the end of the day, most blogs are written to be read, and if even one person reads it and is affected by it, then it’s for them too. Maybe your parents would be proud of you, or you’re doing what your grandparent always wanted to do, or your best friend has supported you through it all. Once you’ve thought about who you’re doing it for, it can sometimes be worth talking to them about it, and reminding yourself of why you’re doing it, to feel inspired again.

Get some perspective

How long have you been working towards your goals? A month? A year? The majority of people don’t become famous overnight, and even then most of them have been working towards it for years before they got their break. Even Taylor Swift was doing open mic nights a few years ago. One of the main reasons that people don’t achieve their goals is probably because they give up before they get there. Who knows, you could be one post or one month away from hitting the big time, but if you give up now, you’ll never know. And even if it takes a little longer, you’re still working on your skills and gaining experience, which will all help when you do achieve your dreams.

Reach out to people

It is 100% worth reaching out to other bloggers (or people in your niche) for advice or opportunities. Ask if you can do a guest post, work for them, get some feedback on your work. It’s also worth remembering that people can only tell you “no”, and they can only tell you “no” if you ask them. But think about what could happen if they say yes. In my experience, most people will want to help you, and if you don’t ask you’ll never know. Most people who have achieved their dreams have had people help them to get to where they are now, so they’ll probably be open to helping someone else achieve theirs. Don’t worry about being shy, bothering them, or not asking for favours, when there are people that are willing to help you achieve your dreams.

Love this! You are so right. It’s easy in the world of blogging to look at all the ‘successful’ people and wish you were doing it full time (or is that just me?). We need to hold onto the little successes and celebrate them all 🙂
