The Christmas is here and it is time to spend time with the ones that we cherish the most. Even though Norwegians are not family people in the sense that they are quite independent from their families they tend to be very traditional during Christmas time. This brings a lot of emotions up in me since my core family is far away and my thoughts go to Brazil during the holidays. I am very happy though that my oldest daughter came to spend the Christmas together with us.
Luckily I have been accepted very well by Johan’s family and they are like family for me as well. Before having dinner it is common to go to church and therefor we went to Nidaros Cathedral at 4 pm. It was a majestic atmosphere there and it was optimal to go there to let the Christmas sink in. After the ceremony I took the opportunity to light a candle for my dad who died when I was 4 while Johan lighted a candle for his grandfather.
This is our 3rd Christmas together and I have been following their traditions since we met. Johan’s family are a bit divided when it comes to traditions since his dad’s side are from Oslo while his mother’s side are from the west coast. They tend to eat pork in Oslo and Lamb on the west coast. Since his dad was here for Christmas we decided to go with the traditions of Oslo and serve pork on Christmas Eve. However, we will serve lamb on boxing day in order to keep up with the traditions of his mother’s side. It is hard for me to decided what is the best and therefor I am glad that we will have both during Christmas.
After opening the presents it was time for some family pictures. It was very wonderful to get up since we had eaten a lot and it felt very good to move around. I don’t know whether you can see it on the pictures but it is actually snowing in the background and I must say it made the Christmas celebrations extra special. Afterwards, it was time for even dessert. Christmas is like one single and long meal haha.
Later in the evening it is common to change clothes to something comfortable and watch a movie together. Below you can see Johan and I quite satisfied with the evening. This was the first time that we have held the Christmas Eve in our apartment and I must say that we are very happy with the result. We want to send some big thanks to my father-in-law who has helped and will help us a lot with the food. He has had some good help in my daughter who has helped him in the kitchen. Stephanie has been a great assistent. It is great to learn from him in order to do it ourselves in the coming years.
Merry Christmas from Johan and I
