Amazing new day has just began and the best of all it is Friday woohoo! Friday’s is one of my favourite days in the week because it’s a start for weekend and of course time for a new special guest! Pete is our special guest today and I hope you take the time to read and get inspired. Remember to visit his site and spread some love!
Hi Pete. Pretty awesome to have you as my special guest today.
1.) What or who inspired you to start blogging?
My wife and I had agreed to be the hosts at a campground in Iowa in 2014, and I thought it would be great to share things about the experience of camping all summer in a blog format. I had heard of WordPress, but never used it before. So, I started the blog with that premise.
It was short lived. I ran out of ideas and story lines. Then I started to use it for songs and poetry I was writing, and was not very dedicated to it. In the spring of 2016, I was diagnosed with cancer, and started blogging in earnest during my treatment and now during recovery. It has been a true blessing to me through this trial.
2.) Can you describe your blog to someone that never read it?
I actually have three blogs right now. Pete Gardner Psalms is a collection of Christian poems. I have been writing poems and songs for about 8 years, and God gives me fresh poems almost every day. This is the content of this blog. I also answer the daily prompt with a poem as often as I can.
Pete Gardner’s Blog is currently a study through the Psalms, in which I share personal reflections of what each Psalm means to me, broken down by verse. I also use this blog to share personal memories and blogging ideas, like a series on pride that was just competed.
Traveling with Paul started with a study through the book of Philippians. Just like the Psalms study, this contains personal reflections on what the verses mean to me. Now, I am starting through Ephesians.
3.) What’s your favourite part of blogging?
Meeting the community. It’s such a treat to read other people’s posts and then comment to start a conversation and encourage them. And it is so encouraging to get comments on my own work. It makes it feel like you are really touching people.
4.) What is the most difficult things about blogging? And what do you find the easiest?
Since I try to blog daily on 3 separate blogs, finding the time to get that done is a real chore. My poems just come when they do, so sometimes I have extra, and sometimes I have a new one right when I sit down to get the blog going. The two bible studies I do take a lot of thought, so wind up taking longer to put together.
What is easy is writing it down once all the work is done.
5.) How much time do you spend on blogging? What do you think is the best social media strategy to get more visitors to a blog?
4-5 hours right now, but I am not working now so that gives me the time, and I love it Once I get back to work, I hope to spend 1-2 hours a day.
Get more visitors? Post more, have some variety (posts with pictures and/or video). Be creative! And visit other people sites
6.) Is blogging worth doing? Would you encourage other people to make their blog?
Absolutely worth doing, if you have a passion for something, which I think everyone does. You have to have a message you want to share and be able to articulate that message pretty well. Then you have to be willing to devote the time to write the blog and become a little involved in the community t have success getting your blog noticed.
7.) How do you motivate yourself to keep the blog up and running?
That’s an easy one for me. I am a part of. I know I will have to start paring back a bit soon as I am going to start doing some work related things.
8.) Can you name some of your favourite bloggers and explain why they are your favourites?
Danledwith.com is at the top. Dan posts several times a day, and I enjoy every one of his posts, from serious to funny. Susan Irene Fox (susanirenefox.com) is incredible, loves he Lord, and is working hard to build bridges and close the gaps on some of the racial bias we see in our country today. A very accomplished writer. Deborah Ann (https://poetrybydeborahann.wordpress.com/) writes Christian poetry and sends out Sticky notes from God – very clever. And Don Merritt (https://lifereference.wordpress.com/author/lifereference/) Don is a very entertaining bible teacher has some great insights.
9.) What do you think is the best strategy that worked well for you to get more traffic to your blog?
Using the Daily Prompt has proven to be a great traffic driver. It surprised me how many people would visit my sight from that prompt. I have started to utilize some of the other prompts as well.
10) What are you doing besides blogging?
I am an independent insurance agent with Aflac, and have been pretty much on hold with that since last March when cancer was discovered, but I will be getting busy with that again soon so blogging will e slowing down a little
11) Is blogging your profession or just a hobby?
Hobby, but I spend a lot of time at it right now.
12) Is there anything else you would like to add?
I want to thank you for allowing me to be a guest blogger here, and I hope everyone reading will take a few minutes to visit one of my blogs.
