No to circumcision!

May 20, 2017

I am a person who respect the cultural things from different countries and the religions and so on. However, there are some aspects of religions that I find hard to understand. One example of this is circumcision.

We have a debate program in Norway where they debate all kinds of things in the society and this week it was about circumcision. Norway has turned out to be a multicultural society which I have no problem with due to the fact that I am also a part of that group. For me this topic has nothing to do with the people doing it, whether they are muslims or jewish, but rather the actions they take on small innocent boy babies that have no clue of what is going on. They are actually taking a non-reversible decision for their babies that they have to live with for the rest of their lives whether they like it or not. They are not born this way and to me it is a violation against human rights.

Furthermore, it reduces the sexual pleasure in their adult lives which is all caused by an action of their parents when they were babies due to a habit that their parents again did to them. Yes, I know that there are some benefits of circumcision such as reduced risk of some sexual transmittable diseases and cancer but when everything is summed up I think that we should reconsider whether this should be allowed in our society.

The jewish and muslims are saying that banning circumcision is linked with racism and lack of tolerance towards their culture which is a huge mislead of the debate. I respect their religion but when it comes to a little baby that has no ability to choose for themselves I consider this a misuse of power as adults. The world has developed and we have for example come a long way when it comes to gay marriage and now I think it is time to challenge this part of the religions as well. I think we should have religious freedom and I don’t care whether people are believing in Gods and even stones but actions like this is a violation that I find hard to accept. The God they believe in created them just like they are born and then I cannot understand why they have to play God themselves and change how God created them.

Leaving aside the explanation given in Genesis, circumcision was a way to weed out hemophilia. The slicing off caused uncontrollable bleeding in hemophiliacs and thus weeded them out. There is also, from what I understand, a decrease in certain diseases in circumcised males, some of them transmittable to women. I also understand that circumcision decreases sensitivity in the penis which means it takes longer to gain an orgasm. (I understand that women often complain about men finishing “early”, this reduces that if I understand correctly.)

I respect your opinion but I still think that every human being should be able to make the decisions for themselves.

Try to pee past the flap and you’ll see there are practical reasons to remove it. One persons opinion only!

You make some excellent points. There are definite health benefits to circumcision both for the man and his sexual partner. Regarding the decision making, circumcision is extremely painful for an adult male and to decide to do this at a later age is not advisable.. It is such a hard decision, but a very deep seated belief and ritual in the Jewish faith, I don’t pretend to know the answer.
