How to increase the traffic on your blog

October 27, 2016

Lately I have gotten many questions on how I have been able to increase the number of readers on my blog. There is no recipe for doing this but I would like to share my strategy with you guys.

When I first stated at WordPress I went through some courses that you can read more about HERE. These courses have helped me to develop as a blogger but I am still learning new things. However, let us go back to how to increase the number of readers.

  • It is very important to keep your blog alive and have at least one post every day. Sometimes I reblog others in order to support my followers and at the same time keep my blog going.
  • Do not forget your followers when you are trying to increase the number of followers and readers. Think of your followers as your customers in a store where a sales manager would always be interested in resale. I use at least two hours every day to give my followers some comments or just a like. I cannot promise to read every post of my followers but I will always try to visit everyone of my followers.
  • By leaving a comment it is easier to find your blog. My advise is to always spread positivism and if you don’t have any positive to say it is better to say nothing at all.
  • It is very important to answer the comments that your followers give you so they will get the recognition that they deserve.
  • The media is a very powerful thing and it is easier to get many followers by being famous which makes your blog more visible. This is something that everyone try to achieve but my advise is to keep blogging about your stuff since we never know what people are looking for.
  • Try to market your most read posts to local newspapers and the like in order to increase other people’s awareness of your blog. I have not done this yet but I will start very soon.

This is my strategy and I hope that it will increase the traffic on your blog.

      • Reply Tony Burgess July 29, 2016 at 2:20 am

when you compose a post add tags on the left sidebar that has tags and categories. Those tags will populate across the WordPress community.

Roberta ‘s proposals are real. I propose to add. Managing, administering a WordPress Blog is a school of life rewarding and positive. The first recommendation is to choose a practical theme obtaining conclusive results display on a phone, tablet, computer.

The second recommendation would be to do everything possible so that the visitor will never be lost. It can browse the blog anywhere with ease and comfort. It knows where it is located and how to find an article, a media, a comment, the output …

Une colonne de service, généralement à droite, doit-être, le fil conducteur, l’information générale, le guide pratique, l’information en continue, le visiteur, le suiveur doit se reconnaître, s’identifier là.

A service colum, usually right, should be the common thread, general information, practical guide, the information continuously, the visitor, the follower must recognize, identify there.

La charte graphique doit rester la même pour chaque article, pour tous les médias. Cela sera une marque de fabrique. La vôtre. Identitaire.

The graphic should remain the same for each item, for all media. This will be a trademark. Yours. Identity.

    Qui veut continuer ?

Who wants to go on ?

  • Reply SonniQ August 5, 2016 at 7:35 am

A blog is a lot of work – every day. Each one of my posts though is like a chapter in a book and takes an average of 2-3 hours or more to write and edit, research and link. It is hard to follow every blogger I’d like to. But then we have to have to time for social media and the comments and follows and shares there as well and I’m also nearly done writing a book AND I put out a newsletter, that is like a mini blog. That is a new venture.4 months old – once a month but it takes at least 2 solid days to put it together. I have a new issue coming out at 6 am. And I write music for the blog, so that has to be recorded. I need 2 sets of hands! If I only blogged it would be different – but I’ve got pretty good stats so it’s been worth it. As long as you love what you do that is the most important thing. When I look at people’s blogs I look for those that are over 2 years old. ( although I read all age blogs ) That seems to be the limit for when people get tired of doing it and quit, If they make it past that point their writing has generally improved, because there really is a learning curve. I don’t have a lot of patience after awhile for people who butcher the English language. If it isn’t their native tongue that is different, but if it is just laziness because they don’t want to learn where to put a comma, or when to capitalize letters or just basic spelling errors then these bloggers aren’t really interested in writing. I also don’t have much interest in blogs that are just about their life or whine and complain how bad they have it. I’ve seen lots of those. They need to ability – maybe over time – to talk about issues that are important to them. I write for outside wordpress. If you only want wordpress bloggers it doesn’t matter how you write, you’ll find people in your own niche, but most of my referrals come from searches so most of my posts, even those that are 2/1/2 years old – when i started – rarely have a month go by where they don’t have hits. That is a good question for a blogger to ask themselves – does their writing have staying power. do people read them no matter how old they are?

I generally leave long comments about what i read. When I see a newer blog and lets say it has 60 comments and replies and it is all.”great blog” “thank you” ” you’re welcome” ” no problem” and on and on without actually saying anything at all, but it looks like a popular blog because it has lots of two word comments. I’m just kinda rambling here. I hope your blog continues to be a success and you can be an inspiration to others.

I love this reply! Especially about grammar! I wrote a post called ‘No Abbreviations please!’ It doesn’t take much time to write correctly!

      • Reply SonniQ August 30, 2016 at 11:05 pm

OH! my pet peeve of all pet peeves. It has gotten so bad in the last ten years. People no longer know how to write, and if they do they don’t use it. The basics of the written language they speak is not that hard but they just don’t care. I try to go over everything I write because spell check is monster and I hate to look stupid. My laptop doesn’t like to capitalize “i” so I have to go back and pound the keyboard. But if young people don’t know how to capitalize the first word in a sentence or where to put a comma or capitalize when needed then they should stay away from a computer keyboard. It’s a shame that kids today are not taught how to write in cursive. When did they decide that wasn’t important anymore? They have no signature. I was talking to my 17 year old niece and she said – seriously – “A couple years ago I had to sign my name and it looked so bad because I had forgotten how.” Two years since she had tried to write! And that was okay with her parents? Did they even know, or did they think it was funny? All they know how to do is use their thumbs.

you know what you’re doing so I’ll always take what you have to say about blogging seriously. But I’m not sure about the whole “leaving a like” idea on your readers. I agree with it if you’re actually reading their post and liking it, but if you’re just going through your feed and liking posts without fully reading them then that reader will eventually catch on

    • Reply Mocha Mad Mum! August 30, 2016 at 12:32 pm

I think Roberta means she is ‘liking & commenting’ on posts. Not that she likes posts in the hope she receives them back.

I’m gonna try out the blogging courses 💟💟 I was always curious since I see a lot of bloggers doing it. How do you make your post appear multiple times in the reader?

    • Reply annasdiabetes August 24, 2016 at 2:38 am

I used to do that. Once you publish your post, you click on Twitter, Facebook and the like. But even before those, there is a WordPress symbol, click it. I did this for a while but then one of my followers became annoyed that they receive 2 notifications by email about the same post. So I quit and don’t do this anymore. But you can try

      • Reply TheLivingMe August 25, 2016 at 1:20 am

Oh thanks!!! Then I probably won’t do it 😇😇😇

      • Reply Berni August 28, 2016 at 11:02 pm

That “annoyed” blogger was me. I wasn’t exactly annoyed. I was curious and thought it was my fault.

But when I see my inbox full of new posts and copies of same posts, I just delete them. I don’t feel offended.

My personal, humble opinion is that don’t blog unless it’s impotant and when you feel like blogging. Don’t reblog just to increase traffic and be important.

I like your posts although they are mostly about diabetes, which I don’t have. But my late mom had. I like your posts because they are about quality, not quantity.

I love your tip on spreading positivity in your comments on other blog posts! It’s so true! There is nothing that can make you look worse as a blogger than being argumentative with everyone you come into contact with. That’s called being an internet troll.

Also, you make a great point about not comparing yourself to larger “famous” bloggers. Many of them have had blogs going for years and years, or have a following on another social media tool that has followed their blog.

Another tip is I have found Instagram & Facebook to be a HUGE help in driving traffic to my blog. Normally, if I have a new post up, I’ll post a photo to let everyone know it’s up for viewing. I also love doing blog posts with Instagram round-ups of some key moments of my last month, couple weeks, etc.

This is a really helpful post. Thank you Roberta for taking the time to share with us. I’ve been doing the comment and share tip since I started on WordPress and have noticed it works. I’m really hoping it picks up more soon too. I have a few people following me. It’s such a shame when you write a post your proud of and no one comments or likes. It’s kind of soul destroying! Hoping to get a big following and interaction on my page. Thanks again!

    These tips do work wonders.
I have been following most of them and I have been getting good traffic.
What you talk of people following is very much true, we should always give the utmost preference to who follow us and one should follow them also, I feel it is a good blogging etiquette.
I am happy having come across you. Actually I came through Dr Miller’s blog where this post was re-blogged in her posts.
The foremost thing is I am Happy with the people here.
    I follow you right now.
    All the best to you.
    Fond Regards,

So in addition to the blog posts that you write and/or post, how much time do you spend doing the things that you have suggested? Additionally, you say you’re thinking of sending some of your posts to local news media. How do you envisage doing that, who is your target, and what do you think the impact might be?

    • Reply Roberta Pimentel September 20, 2016 at 3:40 pm

I was suppose to do that when I was living in Stavanger, but I moved to a new city (Trondheim) so I have yet not done that. I need first to get new friends, jobs before I think to be on the news. Friends is more important than fame to me. I will take each day as they come and my I come on the news one day 🙂

  • Reply SweatpantsandPumps September 20, 2016 at 7:05 am

Roberta, you seem to be so generous with your tips. I’m old (61) yet new to blogging. I have many followers on my Goodreads site but not many on my blog. I’m trying to find others that use their blog for book reviews. I am familiar with “recommendations”. I love historical fiction and can’t seem to find others (even with my tags) that also enjoy that genre. Do you know how I can do this? Warm regards, Martie
